The Nigeria Football Federation has announced the
appointment of Christopher Danjuma as the caretaker coach of the Super Falcons;
replacing Edwin Okon.
Okon before the announcement, was the coach of both the Senior
Women's National team and reigning NWPL Champions (which he's still in charge
of), Rivers Angels.
He took over the role from Kadiri Ikhana in August 2013- who
resigned in November 2012; a fallout of Nigeria's fourth-placed finish at the
AWC in the same year-.
The gaffer oversaw the Falcon's campaign at the on-going
Women's World Cup in Canada, where they crashed out at the group stage.
However, he has not had his current contract renewed.
Speaking over the weekend in Abuja via the NFF website,
Chairman of the NFF Technical and Development Committee, Chief Felix
Anyansi-Agwu confirmed the news which was unsurprisingly making the rounds
“We commend Okon and his crew for the services rendered to
the country, and they did well to reclaim the African Women Championship title
for the country in Namibia in October 2014, thus qualifying the team for the
Women’s World Cup in Canada.
“The contract given
to the crew has elapsed with the Women’s World Cup in Canada. Mr. Christopher
Danjuma will now take over the team in acting capacity, pending the appointment
of a substantive coaching crew, which process is ongoing” he stated.
Christopher Danjuma who until recently was assistant to the
polarising character, Edwin Okon, will see his contract run through the
duration of Olympics qualifiers. First up is the first leg against familiar
foes, Equatorial Guinea, on the 18th of July.
This further fuels reports that the Federation is looking imminently to
hire a foreign coach.
The Federation has assured the public of adequate
preparations for the girls; one that has subjected them to widespread criticism, as the Falcons battle
for one of the two coveted tickets to Rio 2016.
“The team will soon move to Port Harcourt to get used to the
pitch on which it will play Equatorial Guinea in the third round of the
Olympics qualifiers. The NFF will provide everything that the needs to succeed”
said Chief Felix.
Rio 2016 will hold between August 5 to August 21 and the
Super Falcons will be seeking to make it a fourth appearance and since they
last participated in Beijing 2008.
